Visual Arts Mission Statement

· We believe that arts are basic to a complete education.

· The arts are basic to the vitality and quality of the school and the community. The arts address both cultural inclusiveness and diversity.

· Our vision is to provide a safe environment where students learn to express themselves artistically, acquire lifelong skills and develop appreciation for the history, the application and the participation in the arts. The students will achieve skills to be applied to art in their everyday life, to explore and acknowledge all mediums of art and their importance to society.

Visual Arts Philosophy

We the art educators in the Sidney Public Schools believe that every student in our care is talented and capable of growing through art experiences. We also believe that all children can benefit from a quality art experience, especially one that combines the gathering of knowledge, development of skills and the opportunity of expression. Our visual art curriculum is unique in that it combines observation, creativity, thought and hands on exploration. This unique learning experience can have a strong impact on self esteem and the intellectual and emotion development of all the students. This visual language is best understood through the creative act of producing, as well as through instruction emphasizing aesthetics, critical analysis and art history.

The students will explore a variety of essential skills and materials through drawing, painting, fibers, sculpture, printmaking and art appreciation. Each class will work on projects that stress compositional development, creative problem-solving, group cooperation and productive individual work habits.
