2007/2008 School Year

SCEF is excited for the upcoming year. The board has decided to help fund 4 new projects, which range in scope of educational fulfillment. These include another year of new kindergarten supply kits, the annual 6th grade trip to Canada, a Middle School play production, and a donation toward the work of the Robotics Club.

SCEF has raised funds for a number of projects since its founding in 2001. The foundation’s largest and most well-known project has been the work done on the Northern bleachers and press box in Swanson Field at Sidney High School. This project was a huge success as it generated much community support from volunteer work and donations. Other funded projects include a $463.95 grant towards buying 60 new books of Mona Golabek’s “The Children of Willesden Lane” for Vicki Panasuk’s 5th grade class; a $3,000 purchase toward a new baritone saxophone for Sidney Middle School; and a $500 grant for new kindergarten supply kits.

The goal of SCEF is to develop a long term method to finance school projects which the Foundation Board feels will enhance the quality of education in the Sidney Public Schools. An added benefit of the Foundation is to provide a method for community members to make a tax deductible contribution or to procure a tax credit by their donation to this foundation.

Sidney High School receives a new Drum set

One of the first projects that The Sidney Community Education Foundation funded was the purchase of a drum set for SIdney High School, in 2001. With the rise in band attendance and the interest in Jazz Bands, the old drum set was used more often and had become worn. SCEF was approached as a funding source for a new project and after consideration, the board decided that this would be an excellent project to kick start the fulfillment of the mission.

5th graders read “The Children of Willesden Lane”

The Sidney Community Education Foundation donated $463.95 in August of 2006 towards buying 60 new books for Sidney’s 5th grade class.

Vicki Panasuk, Title I instructor requested the purchase of the novel “The Children of Willesden Lane” after attending the Milken National Education Convention in Washington D.C. Representing 1 of 2 winners in the state for the 2004 Milken Family Foundation National Educator’s Ward, Panasuk had the opportunity to discover new educational opportunities for her classroom.

One such opportunity was the cultural and historical awakening that “The Children of Willesden Lane” presented in its remarkable story . Author, Mona Golabek, shares the story of her mother Lisa Jura, a promising pianist  who’s life was forever changed by the events of World War II and the impact it had on her Jewish family. The book looks at Lisa’s life during WWII, the attempts she made to continue her musical aspirations, her friendships and the struggles she faced to help loved ones.

Sidney Middle School gets a New Baritone Saxophone

The Sidney Community Education Foundation donated $3000 in October of 2006 towards purchasing a new Baritone Saxophone for Sidney Middle School. Sue Anderson, the middle school's music instructor put in the request at a time when there was no room in the budget to allow for new instruments. With the raising cost and expensive maintence fees, the school is increasingly finding it difficult to maintain its music department while trying to keep instrument rental fees low for the students.

2006 was a year during which the foundation asked teachers to list certain needs for their classrooms. The foundation picked three such projects, one of which included the baritone saxophone

Tailgate 2006

What a fun event! There were four tailgate parties held, one at each home game. Prep tables and the grill were set up at the North Parking lot at Sidney High School, behind the home bleachers. Stockman Bank sponsored the event, providing for the supplies to be sold.

Brats, cheddar worst, and hamburgers were served for $3 a plate. Included were your choice of cheese, sauerkraut, or grilled onions and a complimentary bag of chips.

September 15th was the first, marking the beginning of the fundraiser. Key Club volunteered to help run the event, providing volunteers who helped serve.

September 22nd was the second tailgate. Protocol was about the same. Booster Club volunteered to help run the event, providing volunteers who helped serve.

October 6th was the third tailgate and was also Homecoming. There were a number of volunteers who helped serve including teachers and VISTA’s.

October 13th was the final tailgate fundraiser. Although there were slight problems with the grill, everything eventually ran smoothly. There were several volunteers from BPA who served and ran the booth successfully.

We raised a total of $1860.77 from this event.

Thank you to everyone who contributed!
