Welcome to the new school year! I look forward to getting to know your child and helping them grow as the year progresses. Here are some notes to help you out this school year.
NUT FREE: This year, we have students in our building with serious food allergies. We must have a nut free environment, meaning NO snacks/treats/lunches containing nuts, including peanut butter.
TAKE HOME FOLDER: Your child will bring home many things this year, but one of the most IMPORTANT is the take home folder. Students will take the folder home and return it each day. Please check it each day for special notes and student papers. Papers on the “left at home side” should be taken out and kept at home. Homework and notes on the “bring right back” side should be returned the next school day. You can also place notes in the folder for me. It is a great way for us to communicate throughout the year. If you place lunch money in your child’s folder, please be sure to put it in a labeled envelope or baggie. If your child forgets his/her folder, don’t make a special trip to school- just send it back the next school day.
ARRIVAL: Arrival time at school in the morning is 7:45 at the earliest with school beginning at 7:55. Your child should go directly to the playground and line up to enter the building when the bell rings. Feel free to walk them in the first couple of days, BUT try to develop independence and leave them on the playground as soon as possible.
DISMISSAL: Dismissal will begin at 3:40 for all students. Bus students will exit out the north (front) doors- exit #1. Students being picked up will exit out the north (kindergarten wing) doors- exit #2, and will be taken to the designated pick up zone. Please do not come to the classroom to pick up your child. You will need to get out of your vehicle to pick them up. Please be prompt when picking up your child because it can be an anxious time. If you make arrangements, other than your child’s normal routine, please send a note or call and leave a message with the office. If your plans change after you drop your child off, please call the office to make that change. I don’t always have time to check my email during school hours.
MASKS: At this point, wearing masks is entirely optional. You will be informed if this policy changes.
DRINKS: Please send a water bottle to school for your child to use throughout the day. This will only be used for water. I will keep the bottles at school Monday-Thursday and send them home at the end of the week to be washed. Please send them back the following week.
ABSENCES: Regular attendance without tardiness is crucial. If your child is going to be absent, communication is important. You must call the office before 9:00 am at (406) 433-2530. If the absence is planned, please notify the classroom teacher in advance regarding makeup work
MUSIC/P.E.: Your child will have P.E. with Mrs. Buxbaum AND Music with Mrs. Wortman EVERY DAY. They will get 20 minutes of each class every day. Please send your child’s P.E. shoes to school to keep in their lockers.
LIBRARY: Your child will have Library with Mrs. Linder each week. Students may check out a book if they return their previous book. If they forget to bring their book back, it is not a big deal. Please do not make a special trip to school- just send it back the following week.
CLASSROOM GUIDANCE: Your child will have Guidance with Mrs. Flynn once a week for the first few weeks of school, and then once a month for the rest of the school year beginning in October. She will help us learn about being a good friend, listening, and other important social skills.
RECESS: Students will play outside for three 15 minute recesses each day, unless it is raining or the wind chill is below 0 degrees. Please keep this in mind when helping your child select clothing for the day. If your child is too sick to play outside, he/she is most likely too sick to come to school.
BREAKFAST BEFORE THE BELL: Students will have the opportunity to eat breakfast at school BEFORE school starts. This is free for everyone! If your child is planning to eat, drop them off at the main entrance (entry #1) and they can go directly to the lunchroom from 7:30-7:50.
SNACK: Since we have an extended school day, we will have an afternoon snack. Please send a box or bag with enough snacks (nut free) for the entire classroom each month. If you send individually wrapped items, please send 22-25.
BEHAVIOR: We follow the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) for our school wide behavior expectations. This includes expecting your child to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be a Learner. Occasionally, you might receive a ‘Behavior Incident Form’ regarding your child’s behavior. This can be perceived as a negative report; however, it’s actually a means of communication between school and home. It informs you of a situation in which an appropriate choice has not been made. Although the situation has been addressed at school, your support and reinforcement at home is appreciated.
WEBSITE/NEWSLETTER: Please become familiar with my webpage (https://www.sidneyps.com/Page/5476) on our school’s website. There is a lot of important information and links throughout my pages.
BIRTHDAYS: We will celebrate your child’s birthday in our classroom on his/her birthday. You may send a special treat (nut free) to school! We are requiring all birthday treats to be prepackaged or purchased from a grocery store/bakery. Please make sure to send all the necessary utensils (napkins, silverware, plates, cups). If it falls on a weekend or holiday, we will celebrate on a Thursday or Monday. If it falls in the summer, I will pick a day. We have 22 students in our classroom. Also, birthday invitations are not to be sent to school to pass out unless the entire class is being invited to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings.
SPEECH: All students will be screened at the beginning of the school year to determine whether or not they need speech services. If they determine that your child could benefit from receiving speech interventions, you will be contacted by the speech team.
TITLE ONE: All students will be assessed at the beginning of the school year with an early reading and early math skills screening. If a student does not make the benchmark, he/she will be eligible to receive Title 1 services. This is a tutorial program with Mrs. Skaar that provides 30 minutes of small group instruction per subject to reinforce what is taught in the classroom.
